  • St. Francis Medical Center is the largest hospital in Northeast Louisiana, as well as one of the largest private employers in Ouachita Parish. The hospital has 343 beds, and had 16,088 admissions in the latest year for which data are available. It performed 2,739 annual inpatient and 2,914 outpatient surgeries. St. Francis Medical Center is part of the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System, with sister facilities including Our Lady of the Lake in Baton Rouge, Our Lady of Lourdes in Lafayette, and St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales

  • Monroe, with a population of 49,000, is the seat of Ouachita Parish. It is the principal city of the Monroe Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the parishes of Ouachita and Union. The two-parish area has a total population of 172,200. The city is the economic, educational, and medical hub for Northeast Louisiana. (See the Map)
    A River Runs Through It ... Ouachita Parish, with the Ouachita River and its bayous running through it, is more than just a "sportsman’s paradise". It is a paradise for keen shoppers and people searching for the next great restaurant. Ouachita Parish is also a haven for artists, musicians and craftsmen.

    The Monroe Civic Center is the location for many events each year, including conventions, trade shows, and several touring Broadway musicals, as well as other productions and concerts. The main complex is the Civic Center Arena, which provides 44,000 square feet of exhibit space along with up to 7,200 seats. The civic center also has the B. D.   • The Downtown RiverMarket is operated by the City of Monroe. The RiverMarket is part of a "Downtown RiverMarket Festival" a nine-month festival held in Downtown Monroe. This festival is a celebration of downtown and the river featuring artisans, food, produce, entertainment, workshops, and kid's activities.
  • The Louisiana Purchase Gardens & Zoo is family fun with animals, many in naturalistic habitats, plants of all kinds, a winding waterway with boat rides, and opening soon, a truly charming train for fun rides through the zoo. There are over 450 kinds of animals from all over the world and a wide variety of exotic plants.
  • The Riverside Cultural district is also home to three museums. The Masur Museum or Art is the largest visual arts museum in Northeast Louisiana. The Biedenharn Museum & Gardens has something for everyone to enjoy including a historic home, formal gardens, the Bible Museum and the Coke Museum. Joseph A. Biedenharn, the first bottler of Coca-Cola, built his home in Monroe in 1914. The Northeast Louisiana Children’s Museum offers a fun and educational learning experience for children and their families.
